AN INAUGURAL Soap Box Derby at Stoke St Mary has raised over £1,800 for the Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance.
The event took place on Sunday in the village, and it is estimated that over 1,000 people turned up to enjoy the race and the other entertainment on offer.
Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow opened the event and her husband Charles Clarke took part, doing the commentary for the race.
One of the main organisers, Steve Hill, said: "It was a really great day and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.
"We had a total of 26 carts, they were all great but especially the Fire Brigade entry, the Penelope's Pitstop and the Duracell Battery."
Other entertainment on the day included afternoon teas, stalls, ice creams, fairground rides for children, a display of vintage vehicles and entertainment from the village Morris Men.
In the evening a 1940's themed dinner dance was held where people really got into the spirit and dressed up.
Steve added: "We had a great performance from the Deane Band and everyone really got into the spirit in the evening.
"Thank you to everyone who came along, and to the people who donated the marquee to us for free.
"We'll definitely be holding something like this again next year, but we'd need more volunteers to help us on the day."
