A SPECIAL event for elderly people was held in a bid to provide support and advice for residents entering their twilight years.
Organised by Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow, the event was organised to coincide with National Older Peoples’ Day at the start of October.
Themed around health and wellbeing, the fair helped to raise awareness of the plethora of activities, hobbies, services, and volunteering opportunities.
The event was held at the Brewhouse Theatre in the county town and there were various taster sessions throughout the morning facilitated by Age UK Somerset, including yoga and chair-based exercise.
But, the finer things of life were also available for the attendees to enjoy, as well as wine tasting supplied by the organisers of the Wellington Food Festival.
More than 30 local organisations were represented at the event, including Wellington-based Young At Heart Club and The Silver Line, which is a free, 24-hour confidential helpline for older people who just want to talk, or need advice regarding personal issues.
Speaking after the event, Ms Pow thanked those who attended and said it had been a success.
She said: “I am delighted with the success of this inaugural event to celebrate National Older Peoples Day.
“Not only did it provide my constituents with a range of useful information and contacts, it also was valuable networking for the organisations who attended.
“Feedback from the event was very positive, with people commenting on the fantastic opportunities available as we get older in Taunton Deane.
“I’d like to thank The Brewhouse, but most importantly all the stall holders and attendees for making the event a great success.”
