Western Counties (W)
Wiveliscombe 17, Chard 41
Leading 14-7 at half time, Wiveliscombe conceded six second half tries with Chard giving the home team a lesson in how to finish good try scoring positions, writes Roger Bellamy.
The visitors won the toss and had no hesitations in playing up the slope in the first half.
Wiveliscombe scored first after their pack put the visitors under pressure close to the try line.
A series of mauls ended with second row Rory Stone scoring a try which was converted by George Rowe.
The home team, again developing good field position inside the Chard 22, then scored a try from a set penalty move finished off by prop Matt Ellis.
Rowe slotted his second conversion for a 14-0 lead.
Chard had the odd scoring opportunity in the first half but managed just one score, through centre Niall Crouch. Paul Nicholls converted to make the half-time score 14-7.
Chard took control after the break, going on to score six more tries mainly through their three quarters, who were a threat throughout.
The visitors controlled the game well with good positional kicks and use of their forwards at the appropriate time.
Billy Brooks (2), George Russo, Huw Edwards and hooker Ben Robinson all crossed for five pointers.
The home team also conceded a penalty try from a Chard driving maul. Ben Thomas added one conversion.
Wivey's only points of the second half came from a George Rowe penalty.
The hosts will look to pick themselves up ahead of the long trip to St Austell on Saturday, while Wivey's 2nd XV travel to Morganians in Somerset 2 (S).
