Taunton ABC’s Pawel Augustynik competed in the Portland Club event at the Castle Town Leisure Centre on Saturday night.

Augustynik was a novice boxer when he first joined Taunton last season and since then has boxed in the light welterweight junior class with eight wins and one loss to his credit.

His opponent was former sparring partner L. Smith from Chard ABC who used to box for Taunton but moved to the newly opened club in his home town.

Both boxers went for it right from the bell, using great combinations.

Smith was strong in the first round but Augustynik still held the upper hand. In the second, Augustynik kept his cool and used excellent combinations of lefts and rights to score clear head and body shots at Smith.

In the third, Smith was cautioned several times for holding, a sign of tiring, allowing Augustynik to continuously score and win by a unanimous decision.

Minehead had two boxers in action at Portland. Danny Wilson, 17, in his first year of senior boxing took on 20-year-old Ben Bovey from Blackmore Vale. Danny never gave ground and himself landed a more powerful shot on his opponent.

The referee stepped in twice in the first round giving Bovey standing counts.

The Minehead boxer continued to overpower his opponent and all three judges awarded him the contest.

Also on the bill was James Bickham, who is in the last season of boxing. His opponent, classy Dale Harris from Penhill, Swindon showed his experience by moving well and using a long job.

When James managed to get inside, he landed a good combination of body and headshots but the long-range punching of the Penhill boxer impressed the judges the most and the decision went his way.
