TAUNTON Boxing Club travelled to Newquay last Saturday to compete at the Newquay sports centre after three hours travel and a four hour wait before the evening commenced.

First in the ring for Taunton was Justin Cornall against M. Mesdahi of Bodmin ABC. Both boxers boxed well throughout the three rounds but Mesdahi won on a unanimous decision.

Next in the ring was Ben Stocker against R. Chard of Launceston ABC for a short bout after Stocker was caught in the throat, which slowed him down. The referee stopped the contest in favour of Chard.

Third to compete for Taunton was heavyweight Rob Milner for his first amateur contest. His opponent was R. Vospor of Carls Stables ABC.

Milner transferred from the Royal Marines to Taunton ABC. He had been training hard for this bout. On the bell, Milner was right on top of Vospor with solid right jabs and strong straight lefts. Vospor was forced to back pedal across the ring as Milner continued to put the pressure on.

It was a good match and the spectators showed great appreciation for the two complete novices with Milner winning the contest on a majority decision.

Last to compete was Mark Cooper who boxed against C. Scott of Newquay ABC. The local boxer had a good reputation so he had great cheers from the crowd on entering the ring.

Both heavyweights met each other ring centre on the bell, each landing powerful head and body encounters. Cooper caught Scott with a heavy blow and put him on the canvas for a standing count of eight.

This was a close bout throughout the remaining rounds but, unfortunately, it was not Cooper’s night as the final results went to Scott on a majority win decision.
