SURPRISE snowfall in parts of Somerset over the weekend caught people off guard as the elements defied weather forecasters.

Heavy rain turned to snow in certain parts of the South-West, including Bath, Frome, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and the Mendips, with up to six inches reported in some areas.

Flood warnings were issued as the snow melted, but are not in place now.

Transport was affected, including the closure of the A357 in both directions at Templecombe because of concerns about a bridge wall collapsing and several bus services in the Bath and Wells areas were cancelled.

Bath and North East Somerset Council said it had been caught unaware as no snow had been forecast.
