THE ‘caring community’ was praised at a candlelit vigil in honour of a Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan.
All Saints Church, Norton Fitzwaren, was full with Marines, their families, local people and civic dignitaries among the congregation at last week's service.
The event was to remember Cpl David O’Connor, 27, of 40 Commando, based at nearby Norton Manor Camp, who was shot while on patrol in Helmand Province 15 days ago.
The Rev Stephen Kivett, rector of Norton Fitzwarren, said: “It was a moving occasion that gave people the opportunity to show their support and express their concern.
“When we have a death like that of Cpl O’Connor, it’s a wake-up call about the stark reality of the situation.
“The candles represent a sign of hope for the future.
“We have a very caring community which comes together on occasions like this.”
