STUDENTS from Court Fields School in Wellington showed impressive teambuilding skills in a challenge to build a race car.

The Wacky Races challenge, at the Bishops Hull Territorial Army Centre, was a way of celebrating the achievements of more than 40 young people who had completed the Prince's Trust's xl programme.

The programme supports young people aged 13 to 19, who are at risk of underachieving at school, by promoting a flexible learning approach and giving them a range of exciting activities to help them re-engage with education.

Dougie Brown, senior head of programmes in the south, says: “The xl programme is a brilliant opportunity for young people to learn in a different environment. “The motivation, creativity and teamwork in the young people who came along was inspiring.

“It's amazing to see how much they've achieved, and to celebrate this with them.”

At the TA Centre event, the Court Fields students were tasked with building a race car fit for a Formula One champion.

Simon Mugglestone, director and founder of Phoenix Leisure, which ran the activities, said: “Our Wacky Races challenge is all about having fun and encouraging young people to work together to problem solve, manage resources and create the best car they can - using the time and equipment available - and these are relevant skills that'll make a difference in their lives.”
