FAMILIES fighting plans to build a new supermarket in Williton formally launched their campaign this week with a promise to developer David Gliddon that he will find opposite even more solid than last time.
Keep Williton Special has opened a petition and has put up posters and leaflets asking people to register objections to the proposal.
Mr Gliddon has produced redrawn plans for a supermarket, retail units and flats on land behind Bank Street where he already owns a business.
A previous application was turned down by West Somerset Council after a large number of objections.
A public exhibition on the latest proposals has already been held but Keep Williton Special spokesman Wendy Spencer, said the group was already examining what appeared to be discrepancies between the plans on show and the detail in the application.
She said: “Be that as it may, it is clear to anyone that opposition to this development is as strong as it was before.
“We are not against any kinds of development in Williton; we should be glad to see some more retail and industrial units and some badly-needed housing for young families, all which would add to the vibrancy of the place.
“But what we are firmly opposed to is a development like this which is on such an enormous scale and out of all proportion to the community it is intended to serve.”
The group is now planning a leaflet campaign highlighting the damage it says the store could inflict on the community and the traffic problems which would result from a new roundabout at access to the site in bank street.
Ms Spencer added: “We shall be contacting everyone who wrote and objected before.
“This is an entirely separate application so fresh objections will need to be lodged.”
