THE last shots taken by a Wiveliscombe photographer before he died are on display in Taunton in what his wife has deemed a “fitting” tribute to his passion.
Nic Wingate passed away in January, aged 62, after being diagnosed with cancer.
His wife, Maggie, said her husband had decided against treatment, pouring his energies into his photographic artwork and living as healthily as possible until he died.
Creatively, the period proved one of the most productive for Nic.
The results form current display ‘Sail On’ – an exhibition he had enthusiastically planned with one of his fellow star artists of 2013’s 10 Parishes Festival and friend John Abraham, an experimental landscape painter.
Sharing a love of atmospheric land and seascapes, John’s presentation of work marks over a year since he re-discovered his artistic prowess after neglecting his paint brushes for 50 years.
John told the County Gazette: “I’d considered whether to go ahead after Nic died, but then I spoke to Maggie, who thought it was a wonderful idea to have his work in ‘Sail On’.”
Maggie, who lives in Wiveliscombe with her and Nic’s two teenage children, said: “John has put Nic’s pieces right in the very middle of the exhibition, which is really nice of him.
“It’s a really nice tribute because taking photographs is what Nic loved most of all, so it’s really fitting.”
Opening times to see ‘Sail O’n at the Creative Innovation Centre in Taunton’s Paul Street are 9.30am to 12.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
