HERE are eight factoids all about care homes.
- The average stay in a nursing home is two years and two months, compared to 362 days in a 1995/96 study.
- The average stay in a residential home is 852 days (two years, four months) compared to 815 days in a 1995/96 study.
- Residents have a 55% likelihood of living beyond the first year of admission.
- 27% of residents live beyond three years.
- Male survival rates are much lower than women’s, being about half the average.
- 57% of net council spending in England on social care for older people is on care home placements.
- Between 2000-08 the number of people in council-supported care homes in England reduced from 200,000 to 172,000.
- The average cost of a stay in a care home – based on a charge of £550 a week – would be £65,400.
