THIS belly-busting burger made national news this week for containing a whopping 1,966 calories – equivalent to 98% of a woman’s recommended calorie intake for one day.

The Hungry Horse pub chain has launched the Double Donut Burger, consisting of two beef burgers, melted cheese, four smoked streaky bacon rashers and barbecue sauce served in two grilled, glazed ring donuts.

Hungry Horse calls it “bizarre but brilliant” but some media have branded it a “heart attack on a plate”.

Mel Wakeman, senior lecturer in applied physiology at Birmingham City University, said Hungry Horse was “ludicrous and irresponsible” for selling the burger.

A Hungry Horse spokesman said its menu caters for “a variety of tastes and appetites and includes everything from lower calorie options such as our hot chicken and bacon salad at 393 calories, through to the indulgent occasional treat such as our new Double Donut Burger”.

Hungry Horse runs the Stonegallows Inn near Taunton, where manager Ben Pitts said: “We’ve had a few people try the burger; it has had mixed reviews as some like it and some don’t.

“We’ve not had any complaints personally about the amount of calories in the burger.

“All the nutritional information is displayed on our website and people can choose from a wide range of food we offer.”
