THE Bridgwater area has far more motoring offenders than other parts of the county, new figures show.
Road safety charity Brake has released a breakdown of fixed penalty notices for driving offences by postal area, to launch its Road Safety Week.
The figures show nearly 5,000 fixed penalties were issued to drivers across all the TA postal areas last year – 4,928 for speeding, and 64 for careless driving.
The TA6 postcode, which includes Bridgwater, North Petherton and Wembdon, topped the list of shame for both categories, with 14 fixed penalties for careless driving and 660 for speeding.
TA1, which includes Taunton, Bishop’s Hull and Bathpool, had four careless driving offenders and 500 fixed penalties for speeding.
The figures below relate to the home address of the offender, not the location where the offence occurred.
Across the South-West, 74,338 fixed penalty notices were issued for speeding and 1,083 for careless driving, which became a fixed penalty offence in August 2013.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, said: “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness."
