MEMBERS of Cutcombe Young Farmers Club (YFC) had a successful weekend competing as part of a Somerset YFC team at the English Winter Fair held at the County Showground in Stafford.
Nineteen teams entered from 18 countries across England and Wales this year and resulted in a very high level of competition.
Young Farmers competed to judge live beef and sheep classes and lamb and pork carcase classes.
Cutcombe YFC’s Katherine Bigwood gained first place in the senior live beef competition and Jock Muirhead came away with second place in the senior live lamb competition.
Other wins for the team of eight representing Somerset YFC were Cutcoombe’s Katherine Bigwood and Bridgwater YFC member Jake Sayer who achieved first place in the live beef section by working as a pair, and the live team consisting of Jock, Jake, Katherine and Emma Clothier won The Michael Bradshaw Award for the overall stockjudging.
Somerset YFC were placed third overall.
Stockjudging and carcase judging competitions remain an important and competitive tradition in the Young Farmers Federations across the country.
