AN evening of storytelling about the Quantock Hills has been held at Halsway Manor hosted by Crowcombe and Stogumber Primary Schools.
Stogumber Primary School runs an afterschool journalism club who reported on the event.
Oban Mackie, aged 10, reports:
On the penultimate Thursday of October, key stage two from Crowcombe and Stogumber Primary Schools gathered at Halsway Manor – entertaining friends and family with stories from the magnificent Quantock Hills.
This is part of the amazing project called ‘Storywalks’ which is trying to improve the children's reading and writing skills.
Clare Viner, storyteller, shared the stories with the children.
Rebekah West, Quantock Ranger, enhanced them with facts about the hills they could include in their stories.
The stories were recorded for Wiveliscombe’s 10 radio by the school’s journalism club.
This will be put together to form a onehour radio show which will be broadcast in 2015.
Kelsie Beilby, one of the journalists, said: “It’s really exciting because in normal primary schools you would never get the chance to be recorded for the radio and it’s brilliant that Mr Wedderkopp, the project leader, has organised it.”
The children really enjoyed it, as well as the parents!
The next stage of the schools’ Storywalks project is to rewrite these stories into chapters and link it to an amazing GPS Internet program, so people can access them on the hills.
