BLENHEIM Gardens in Minehead is being considered as an entry into the prestigious Green Flag awards by West Somerset Council.

The gardens are currently undergoing a makeover thanks to a £5,000 grant from the council to restore the park.

Work began in the summer and now a new team is in place to take the restoration forward.

The council has been impressed by the standard of improvement of the park and is now considering entering it in to next year’s Green Flag Awards.

The scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK.

The new team has begun planting 4,500 annual bedding plants and a further 1,700 bulbs to ensure a brilliant spring display.

Work is in progress to spruce up shrub beds and to keep the beautiful lawned areas free of dead leaves.

Cllr Dave Westcott, lead member for community, said: “Apart from the initial £5,000 investment in the summer, the work is being carried out at no extra cost to the community.

“The transformation is quite startling and shows how beautiful Blenheim Gardens are.

“The approach of winter has revealed the dramatic ‘bones’ of the park and these will be enhanced when the spring flowers bloom.”
