TWO town wardens will patrol Taunton’s streets in the run up to Christmas to reassure shoppers and party-goers.
The pilot scheme will cover the town centre and parks as well as anti-social behaviour hot spots.
Taunton Deane Borough Council is funding the trial which will run from December 1 to January 1 at a cost of £5,000.
Cllr Jane Warmington, who holds the community leadership portfolio, said: “The wardens will be there to help visitors to our county town at the busiest time of year. Their role is to spot any trouble that might annoy or upset people and to report any incidents quickly to the authorities.
“We are investing in making Taunton an attractive place and this is just the latest example of how we as a Council can help. We want people to remember Taunton for all its good things and to return because they have had a great day out.”
The wardens will report problems such as sharps and needles, assist visitors to the town and move on beggars and street drinkers.
They will also check key locations such as public loos, cash points and administer first aid.
The wardens will be badged as Taunton Deane Council town wardens.
Police and South West Businesses Against Crime are fully supporting the pilot scheme which could be extended in future.
