BUSINESS leaders in Somerset will get the chance to quiz parliamentary candidates in the run up to the General Election at a series of election hustings held across the county.
Taunton is just one of six venues which also include Bridgwater and Yeovil where party policies and prospective MPs will be held to account.
The events are being organised by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce which says it is the first time a business organisation has held hustings in every one of the county’s six parliamentary constituencies.
With two of the constituencies electing new MPs due to retirements, two others recognised as marginal seats, and UKIP’s recent by-election successes, Somerset could see some of the most vociferous campaigning in the country.
Graham Knight, chairman of the Somerset Chamber, said the hustings will ensure the business community can hear from and influence the candidates prior to the General Election.
“While others might seek meetings with sitting MPs, we will be placing all the main candidates from all six constituencies in front of the business community of Somerset to hear what they will do for their business electorate and how they will support our business plan for Somerset, should they be elected.
“As one of only 52 Chambers in the UK accredited to the British Chambers of Commerce, we hold the unique position of balancing the national issues with the local challenges that Somerset businesses face. Being as passionate about Somerset as we are, it is imperative that the county Chamber shows real leadership on behalf of the business community.”
Mr Knight has been appointed the Chamber’s interim chief executive officer until the post is filled in the new year.
Speaking about the role, he added: “The Chamber is a strong and growing organisation with a talented team and supportive Board, all of whom will continue to work hard to support our members, deliver successful projects on behalf of our business services clients and ensure that the Chamber continues to thrive.”
The Taunton event will be held on April 2 with Yeovil on April 7 and Bridgwater and West Somerset on April 14. Venues will be announced nearer the time.
