COUNTY Gazette reporter Hollie Borland was runner-up in the Best TV News Feature category at the 2014 Student Journalism Awards.
The Broadcast Journalist Training Council (BJTC) held its award ceremony at Birmingham City University.
The ceremony was hosted by BBC Breakfast Business presenter Dominic Laurie and the BBC’s Neila Butt.
They were joined by industry leaders from Sky News, ITN, ITV and the BBC.
The record number of entries this year was whittled down to eight winners.
“I feel proud that I was nominated and the quality of work from the other entries was so strong,” said Hollie.
Hollie’s entry, titled ‘Souviens-toi: Remember’, was a short documentary produced as part of a university project exploring the ruins of a French village called Oradour-Sur-Glane.
The villagers were massacred by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War and, to this day, no one is sure why.
Hollie added: “Making the documentary was a real test of my skills and patience as it seemed like everything that could have gone wrong, did.
“But I would like to thank my sister, Chloë, for being my translator as I don’t speak a word of French!”
The judges said of Hollie’s entry: “This entry stood out.
“The traditional voice-over replaced by haunting imagery and music and in parts some very moving contributors.
“Beautifully shot and thoughtfully constructed.”
