A WEAPONS Amnesty held by Avon and Somerset Police in Minehead has come to a close.
Minehead police station was amongst eight other stations across the region who displayed surrender buns aimed at encouraging people to safely dispose of a firearm or knife without fear of prosecution for illegally owning a weapon.
More than 90 firearms and ammunition were handed in across the force as part of the fortnight-long weapons surrender, which came to a close on Sunday.
The firearms handed in have included several pistols, revolvers and air rifles. Background checks will take place on all firearms handed in to check if they are linked to any crime committed across the region.
Chief Inspector Debbie Palmer- Lawrence, Operational Policing, Policy and Support at Avon and Somerset Constabulary, said: “The response we have had has been great – we have taken a large amount of weapons off our streets and prevented them from getting into the wrong hands or used to cause harm or distress.
“Although the surrender is now over, I would always encourage members of the public who have a weapon and are unsure of its legality, to contact us and ask the question.”
