CONCERNS about health and social care in Somerset have shot up, according to the sector’s watchdog.
Healthwatch Somerset, which represents patients and carers, received 240 issues of concerns in the six months to October – up from 54 in the year to April.
Manager Pat Foster said: “Patients, carers and member of the public raise a wide variety of issues with us.
“They range in the last few months from comments about waiting times, staff attitudes, parking or appointment times to direct complaints about specific services.
“About 15% of the comments are positive but the majority raise concerns that need to be addressed.
“We always offer advice and support, and raise issues with the health and care providers direct to ensure that changes are made.”
Rachel Robinson, chief executive of The Care Forum, which runs Healthwatch Somerset, said: “It is good news that more people are telling us their stories and letting us know about their experiences.
“We are in a unique position - we are funded to work for patients, but we have a seat at the table where decisions are made.
“The more information we have from the people who use the services, the greater impact for good we can have.”
