PRINCESS Anne is to visit Minehead for the European Outdoor Tug of War Championships in September.

The Princess Royal will meet the organisers and participants on Friday, September 21 at the event, which takes place at Minehead Football Club from September 19-24.

Tug of War Association spokesman Alan Knott said: "The royal visit is a great boost for Minehead, and for the championships.

"Not only will it increase the profile of this event, it is also a reward for all of the hard work that has been put into organising the event by our own organisation and Minehead Town Council."

The Princess will be introduced to members of West Somerset Council, Minehead town council, representatives of the Tug of War International Federation and the English Tug of War Association, and members of the England tug of war squad.

Mr Knott added: "The championships, along with the royal visit, will go a long way to increasing the numbers of visitors to the town.

"Teams from all over Europe will be competing at the event in order to be crowned European Champions, with around 1500 competitors taking part."

The event will be open to supporters and spectators on all days of the championships, and the Tug of War Association wants local people to come and support the England teams.
