TAUNTON Deane Council has confirmed there are problems at a halfway house in Wellington, where occupants are being blamed for a string of anti-social behaviour in the town.
Wellington newsagents EJ Teare wrote to Wellington Town Council on August 6 to say they believed the occupants of the council-owned hostel in the town centre were subjecting them to "systematic attacks of shoplifting".
Mrs Lettley wrote: "They also exhibit other anti-social behaviour by throwing water over pedestrians as they walk by, spitting down on people and intimidating local citizens when on the town streets.
"They also cause a nuisance all night through shouting, yelling and screaming at all hours.
"We feel this is totally the wrong kind of property to have in a town centre where many temptations lie. Local police have been brilliant but they are understaffed and cannot be in two places at once - an increased police presence is needed."
In response to the policing issue, PC Nick Feetenby of Wellington police said: "Whenever we get thi-ngs reported to us we obviously do what we can. We are currently reviewing CCTV footage and talking to people and we do try our best.
"People need to report it at the time and if officers are available then they will attend the incident."
Taunton Deane Council manages the properties on behalf of the owner. "We have been made aware there are problems," said council leader Councillor Ross Henley.
"As part of the Housing Management Contract we are attempting to resolve these issues through the right legal framework."
