I STILL haven't got a definitive description of The Sohodolls, whose debut album Ribbed Music for the Numb Generation' is released on September 3 and who will be in Taunton next month (see later).

I've seen them described as two-girl and three girl she-band plus he-members, the album carries a photo of what looks like one-girl four-boy, and descriptions variously between those above But everyone sees them as a sexy, sleazy post-feminism rock band, with vixen Maya von Doll the lead vocalist whose live stage performances have raised more than a few eyebrows!

She feels her generation has been cheated, making it dumb, numb and unquestioning. With a mix of rock n roll, electro, glam and punk they feel this ribbed collection music will help their generation tap into their primal instincts again!

Be that as it may (what? I hear you say) this is very much electro-synth-punk and in your face, an eclectic mix of Gary Numan from the late 70s, mixed with a bit of Soft Cell. With songs about strippers, violence, paranoia and police car chases you could be forgiven for thinking it was mixed in London or New York - actually, it couldn't be further from the truth was recorded in a barn in Cornwall!

While the Dolls have great harmony and certainly soft and sexy voices, I would like to hear the band using some more beefed up, loud and raucous vocals which would push their boundaries a bit further.

Stripper' is all fuzzed and phased with hushed vocals before the big chorus, and Prince Harry' is a catchy come-on to our third in line!My Vampire' has Killeresque organ work and Trash The Rental' something we don't recommend in this clash with the constabulary!

There are slower numbers, loud synched sounds and some erotic even pornagraphic lyrics with robotic beats and dance frenzy grooves. It could go well in the raves and those lyrics would bring it further into a more mainstream buyers' market - perhaps they don't want that.

Right and Right Again' is the single from the album out August 20 and the album hits the shops on September 3 (Filthy Pretty Records). Get glammed up for their appearance at Taunton's Café Mamba on September 13, it should be some show - and later at the Louisiana, Bristol on October 3
