POLICE investigating a number of burglaries and thefts from vehicles in Wellington have arrested a suspect.

Officers made the arrest after a neighbourhood PCSO spotted a man in the town who matched the description given by victims.

A man was arrested just before 9am on Thursday, May 31, on suspicion of burglary and has since been released under investigation.

Police had earlier urged residents to be alert after almost 40 incidents of thefts of cash from homes and vehicles over a month.

The majority of incidents involved thefts of loose change from vehicles but there had also been six burglaries reported.

That figure has since risen to 58 offences in total, including seven burglaries.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “The offences have taken place in the early hours and the burglar has always made off immediately when disturbed by a householder.

“Detectives continue to investigate the crimes, while neighbourhood and response officers are being supported in increased patrols of the area by colleages from Tri-Force.

“Anyone who sees someone trying door handles or acting suspiciously around homes or vehicles is urged to call 999 immediately.”

People are also asked to make sure they secure doors and windows and set house alarms, as well as emptying vehicles of valuables and ensuring they are locked.
