TAUNTON'S annual charity boat race is ready to return this weekend.

The race, held in aid of Headway Somerset, a charity which supports people with head injuries, takes place on the River Tone on Sunday, June 10.

This is the fifth event of its kind to take place in the town.

The series of races kick off at 10am and run until 3.30pm.

Teams are encouraged to wear fancy dress as they take part, as there are medals for the teams in first, second and third place and also best fancy dress entry, as well as the wooden paddle award for the team with the slowest time.

Hilary Dicks, chief executive for Headway Somerset, said: “The Dragon Boat Festival offers a great day out for both participants and spectators and will hopefully raise plenty of money for the charity.

"Those who choose to visit the races will also be treated to a variety of food and drink stalls for a small fee which will support the charity, including a hog roast, pancakes and ice creams.

"We are grateful to Grubs Up for sponsoring this year’s event.

"We are expecting another very competitive day and hope that people will come along and support the event.”

The popular annual event is a key date in the diary for Taunton businesses, clubs and organisations. Around 20 teams take part in the race down the river.

Nick Irvine, operations manager for Grubs Up said: "Grubs up is very proud to sponsor the Taunton dragon boat race in aid of Headway somerset.

"The boat race is a fantastic day out for all the family and we hope for a good turnout this year.

"We will be trying to hold onto our title after winning last time around although there is some seriously stiff competition this year.

"We will also be on site with our festival trailer supplying our famous pulled pork and coffee's. We will also be supplying a case of free water to all the teams entering."

Headway Somerset supports more than 100 individuals with brain injuries and their families at any one time.

It delivers, on average, 40,000 hours of support through its brain injury centres and community one-to-one services.
