A GROUP of travellers have parked up on a plot of land in Taunton prompting the council to take action.
A local resident said they saw 'several caravans' as well as a number of cars, vans and animals parked up on Wellsprings Road last night (June 6).
A spokesman for Taunton Deane Borough Council said council officers visited the travellers to assess the situation.
"When dealing with unauthorised encampments on Taunton Deane Borough Council-owned land, the council has an agreed procedure to follow," the spokesman said.
"It also has obligations in respect of health and housing which it must assess and asks to be notified of any special circumstances by way of forms left with the occupants.
"Council officers have visited the group of travellers currently camped on land adjoining Wellsprings Road in Taunton to assess the situation and to leave the welfare forms with the group.
"The travellers will then be asked to leave the site and, if they fail to comply with the request, formal eviction procedures will be initiated.
"This includes legal action if necessary."
