BINGO players couldn't keep their eyes down when local MP Jeremy Browne dropped in to call out the numbers last week.

Mr Browne paid a surprise visit to the Mecca hall on Corporation Street to highlight the social enjoyment and employment that bingo provides in Taunton.

He said: "The Gaumont Palace Theatre is a fabulous example of Art Deco architecture. Designed in 1932, it is a listed building, and the design features inside have been carefully maintained."

Years ago the theatre had hosted musical stars, including Elton John, David Bowie and The Beatles.

"It is a shame that the building is not still used for concerts but I am always told that this is not a financially viable option. So we should be pleased that Mecca are keeping the venue open and it is also still used occasionally for other events like the OrchestraWest concert last year," he said.

"Mecca Bingo is a useful employer in Taunton and some of the staff have worked for the company for decades.

"The main benefit is that hundreds of people in Taunton Deane enjoy playing bingo. The amount of money being spent by each visitor is fairly modest and, although everyone enjoys winning, it is mainly a social activity."

Mr Browne spent some time calling out numbers for the enthusiastic bingo fans.

"It was fun calling out the numbers. I was told to avoid the traditional calls like Two Fat Ladies - 88' but it still required a bit of concentration to make sure I announced the numbers nice and clearly."
