A DEVASTATING spell from Andrew Caddick helped Somerset Sabres to a 30-run triumph at home to Durham Dynamos in Division Two of the Pro40 competition yesterday (Thursday).

The tall fast bowler continued his excellent season with figures of 5-49 from eight overs as the Friends Provident Trophy winners were bowled out for 258 in reply to Somerset's 289-6.

Somerset skipper Justin Langer chose to bat on another Taunton belter and his decision was justified as the top three made better-than-a-run-ball half cenutries.

Marcus Trescothick led the way with 84 from 79 balls while wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter, opening the batting for the first time, smashed 61 from 50 balls.

Both went in quick succession but South African Neil McKenzie continued the good work on his home debut with 69 from 53 balls.

In reply, Durham were well in the hunt as they reached 191-2 with the in-form Phil Mustard (84 from 74), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (68 from 56) and Kyle Coetzer (42 from 33) all in the runs.

But a magnificent second spell from Caddick, who had earler removed Michael Di Venuto, sparked a dramatic collapse as the visitors lost their last eight wickets for 67 runs.

He got rid of Mustard, Dale Benkenstein, Gordon Muchall and Gareth Breese before Steffan Jones (2-41) and Ian Blackwell (3-39) finished the job.

It was, however, a day to forget for left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby who recorded the most expensive eight-over spell in one-day cricket by a Somerset player, finishing with 0-76, exceeding the 74 conceded by Tom Cartwright against Kent in 1970.

Somerset continue their Pro40 campaign on Monday when they face Kent at Canterbury and, the following day, take on Leicestershire in a floodlit game at Taunton (4.40pm).
