WOMEN are being warned to be on their guard after a spate of handbag thefts in Taunton town centre.
Police and Community Support Officers are mounting a high visibility operation to target the thieves and help make the streets safer.
As well as extra patrols, officers are offering advice to the public about personal safety and security of their belongings, including bags and wallets.
Parents are being warned not to leave personal effects are display on the top of pushchairs and prams.
Taunton Centre Beat Manager PC Nick Wood said: "Both high visibility and plain clothes officers will be operating in the town, targeting these criminals and giving public reassurance.
"We'll be operating a zero tolerance on all offenders."
Police will be working in partnership with Taunton's CCTV operators, and Taunton Retailers against Crime.
PC Wood added: "Taunton is already a very safe place to live and work and we are working to make it safer still."
Police offer the following tips on being streetwise: *Don't walk alone if possible, especially after dark.
*Avoid short cuts and deserted areas; keep to well-lit, busy streets.
*After dark avoid large bushes or dark areas where someone could hide.
*Be aware of your surroundings, and avoid using personal stereos or radios - you might not hear trouble approaching.
*Don't wear a lot of jewellery, no matter how inexpensive.
*Carry your bag close to your body, if possible with the opening towards you.
*Try not to overload yourself with items.
*If you are out and about always keep your briefcase or bag in view.
*Don't flash your cash or mobile. Keep their use discreet and put them away after use.
*When going to your car or home, have your keys at hand and easily accessible.
*Consider carrying a personal attack alarm.
*Carry a phone card or change to make a call.
