CHILDREN are being encouraged to take "suitable risks" after being asked what free play activities they would like to see in the Taunton and Wellington area.
And Play Rangers' could be employed to ensure the youngsters feel safe when having fun in play areas.
Taunton Deane Council has adopted a strategy to improve and extend free play provision as part of keeping children fit and healthy.
The initiative was drawn up by the local Play Partnership, in consultation with councils, relevant groups and young people.
The Deane now plans to bid for £208,000 Big Lottery funding for Play Rangers and special play days.
Rangers will help young people feel safe in play areas, promote children's self esteem, improve community involvement and increase the level of play.
The council wants to see youngsters get active, improve their health and enjoy fun activities their parents once took part in.
They will be encouraged to take suitable risks by building dens, snowball fights, flying kites, running, jumping and climbing.
Youngsters who took part in a consultation at French Weir Fun Day said they want to be involved in designing play areas, would like to play in wild or natural places and take part in play days.
Cllr Alan Wedderkopp, Executive Councillor for Community Leadership, said: "The council has a policy to provide the best possible for young people in Taunton Deane by having inclusive play facilities for all children, of all ages, particularly in the deprived areas."
