DR Michael Mosley, the man behind the iconic 5:2 diet is like the pop group, Crowded House.
Many years ago there was an advert for Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House which said you’ll recognise more Crowded House songs than you think.
This is true for Dr Michael Mosley as you have probable seen more of his programmes or television documentaries which he has been involved with than you think.
These programmes include Should I Eat Meat?, Countdown to Life: the Extraordinary Making of You, Are Health Tests Really a Good Idea?, The Victorian Slum, Life On The Ward and The Secrets of Your Food.
Now he is embarking on his first ever UK theatre tour with his new show Trust Fast Health which will be at the Octagon in Yeovil on Sunday, February 10.
Speaking to Michael you can hear the passion for science in his voice, the enthusiasm for learning more about the human body and what we can do to improve the quality of our lives.
He doesn’t believe the plethora of losing weight books or those tell you how to eating healthier are tapping into our search for eternal life.
He said: “No, I don’t want to live for ever.
“What I want is for us to live healthier for longer. We are all living longer and we need to make the most of the life we have.
“We need to look after ourselves now so we can make sure the future is better for ourselves.”
Looking at how different crises have affected people he pointed out the obesity crisis which started in the 1980s and hormones being injected into meat which is now illegal.
He also talked about smoking and how this has been reduced by raising the price of cigarettes and making it more socially unacceptable.
But other things like manufacturers telling customers their products were low on fat or had no fat turned out to be utter nonsense. Part of the problem he said stemmed from manufacturers tapping into our hormonal manipulation through outside pressures.
In his new book The Fast 800 (published by Short Books) he explains how to combine rapid weight loss and intermittent fasting for long-term health.
This is just one milestone on his road to success and he has enjoyed.
Talking about his science/health television journey he said: “It has been a huge (personal journey) and I started off at the BBC where I was for 30 years.
“I was a director, executive producer and presenter.
“I had a self revelations when six years ago I was diagnosed with Type Two diabetes and was able to reverse it through nutrition and health.”
One of the important elements of working in television is to make sure the shows are entertaining.
They cannot be too much Open University or you lose them or too much Generation Game as it will mean you are not taking the topic seriously.
Speaking about this balance, Michael said: “What you have to do is to make things interesting and different, it has to be something different.
“You need to make it interesting and not dumb down the external challenge. I do a lot of public speaking so I am able to gauge how the audience react, if they laugh or smile.
“I have never done this (UK tour) but I am looking forward to it.”
In his show Dr Mosley will take audiences on the unconventional journey that he himself has travelled, from swallowing tape worm to uncovering revolutionary new ways to lose weight, get fit and reduce stress.
One of new revelations in diet and the human body has been the discovery of how our guts work.
It was a topic Dr Mosley wrote about in his book ‘The clever guts diet’.
He provides scientifically proven ways to control your cravings, boost your mood, and lose weight by encouraging a more diverse microbiome and increasing the good bacteria that keep you healthy.
It states: “Showing how junk food and overuse of antibiotics have wiped out many good gut bacteria, leading to a modern plague of allergies, food intolerances, and obesity.”
He feels this wiping out of good bacteria ‘old companions’, he believes had lead to a rise in all the allergies people suffer from today.
He feels this can be reversed and we can all get back to being healthier.
