THE work of volunteers was the focus of a visit by Her Majesty Princess Margaret in June 1987.
The Princess visited the new Voluntary Service Centre, housed in the Municipal Buildings in Corporation Street, on Friday, June 12.
Groups including the Citizens' Advice Bureau, the transport for the disabled scheme and the Neighbourhood Care Association, were housed in the centre, which was converted after Taunton Deane Council moved to Station Road.
Jenny Sparks, who accompanied the Princess on her tour of the facilities and an exhibition of voluntary work, said: "She took a great interest and was very impressed by what she saw.
"It was, without doubt, a tremendous boost to the voluntary organisations involved and hopefully will get more people interested in what we do."

After meeting officials and delegates, the Princess unveiled a plaque just yards from where her sister, the Queen, had previously unveiled another commemorative sign during her visit to the Municipal Buildings on May 8, 1987.
