A PROPERTY has been badly damaged after a fire near Taunton

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service rushed to Staplegrove at 6.39pm today after they received several calls reporting a property on fire.

Two fire engines from Taunton and Wellington were initially sent to the scene.

On arrival crews confirmed smoke and flames were coming from the bedroom on the first floor of the property.

They immediately deployed firefighters to extinguish the fire using two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet.

Crews at the scene then requested additional resources.

Three additional fire engines were mobilised from Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington as well as an incident command unit from Wiveliscombe and an aerial ladder platform from Taunton.

At 7.20pm crews were continuing to fight the fire using four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one safety jet, one triple extension ladder and thermal imaging cameras.

At 9.47pm the incident was scaled down to two fire engines at the scene and the fire was extinguished with crews dampening down and looking for hotspots.

"This was a fire within a first floor bedroom and there was 100% fire damage to the room of origin, 100% smoke damage to the property and fire damage to the rear of the property," a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

"Crews will be on scene for the next few hours making safe and dampening down hotspots."
