THE widow of a Somerset man who died following an "unprovoked attack" in Greece has launched a fundraising appeal to pay the legal costs of court case against the men accused of his murder.

Matt Jeffery, 35, was hit to the ground while in Zante on May 23 2019.

Matt, from Templecombe, was placed in an induced coma and flown to Athens, where he spent five days in a hospital intensive care unit.

Tragically his injuries had left him brain dead and his family made the agonising decision to agree to his life support being switched off.

His two attackers are facing a murder trial in Greece, which has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

His widow Charlotte said on a gofundme page: "The court case against his two attackers, which has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, should take place in the next few months.

"Murder trials in Greece are very different to the UK and the victim’s family are required to appoint their own local lawyer to represent them in court.

"The cost is yet unknown, but it is likely to exceed €20,000 just in legal fees."

Charlotte described Matt as "a true gentleman" and "a much loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend".

"He had a heart of gold, adored his family and would help anyone who needed it," added Charlotte.

She is appealing for donations to contribute towards the legal costs "of achieving the justice Matt deserves".

So far almost £15,000 has been raised - you can donate at www.gofundme.com/f/justice-for-matt-jeffery

Following his tragic death, Matt helped save the lives of five other people through organ donation.
