MAJOR roadworks on a busy commuter road into and out of Taunton are set to bring further traffic disruption to the town from today (Monday).
The improvement scheme at Toneway will see the upgrading of the Creech Castle junction.
The £8.3million scheme, which is due for completion next summer, aims to ease traffic congestion and improve access to the county town at a main pinch point on the local highway network.
It should bring an end to traffic disruption at peak times.
Key problems it will solve include limited stacking space for vehicles turning right into the A38 Bridwater Road towards Monkton Heathfield,
The junction lacks any capacity for future permitted development in Monkton Heathfield and is very poor for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new layout, due for completion next summer, will have increased capacity by widening and adding additional lanes.
There will be three straight ahead lanes in both directions on Toneway.
There will also be three lanes for vehicles turning from the A38 Bridgwater Road from either direction onto Toneway.
The project had been due to start last year but was delayed by the pandemic.
The right turn lane from Toneway onto the A38 Bridgwater Road north will be much longer to cope with increasing traffic volumes. The improved junction will have an integrated parallel crossing to offer significant benefits for cyclists and pedestrians.
During the work, the A38 Bridgwater Road to the north of Toneway will be closed to traffic.
From today and until further notice, Taunton's two park and ride schemes will be free to use for all passengers.
