THEY say the course of true love never does run smooth and this year’s Love Island would seem to confirm it.
With just a week to go and everyone coupled up, for the time being at least, I thought I’d take a look back on the highs and lows of each pairing and offer my predictions on which relationships stand a chance on the outside.
The Couples
Jake Cornish and Liberty Poole
Let’s start with Somerset’s very own water engineer, Jake Cornish. After Liberty Poole stepped forward for him on the first episode of the series, the couple have seemed like a match made in heaven. Until recently of course.
Following the revelation that in the early days Jake said he “doesn’t want to rip her clothes off” the couple have experienced a rocky patch. But can they get back on track before the show’s climax?
Relationship high
The becoming-boyfriend-and-girlfriend ceremony. Never has a magnetic bracelet meant so much to a person.
Relationship low
When Liberty expressed how hurt she’d been by the comments revealed on Mad Movie night, Jake’s only response was to say, “you’re my girlfriend aren’t you?” – not a great reassurance, most viewers agreed.
Will they make it on the outside?
This one could really go one way or another. Jake’s head could be turned with all the attention back in the real world and Liberty’s insecurities may become too hard to handle. Yet, away from the intensity of the Villa and no longer under the watchful eye of millions, I still think there is a chance their relationship may actually blossom and they will one day be an old married couple telling the grankids all about Love Island.
Faye Winter and Teddy Soares
From just over the border in Devon, Faye Winter’s start in Love Island made us all consider whether she was really destined to find love in the villa but then in walks Teddy Soares.
None of us could really believe this cool, calm and collected man could seriously be interested in the emotional whirlwind that is Faye. It soon become clear, however, that he was smitten.
They have certainly had some rough waters to navigate but navigate them they have and they now deserve a bit of plain sailing for a while.
Relationship high
I think this pair’s highs come in the small gestures, like Teddy leaving his ring on the cushion for Faye to find when the boys were shipped out to Casa Amore or bringing the dog teddy back with him. Hand’s up who held back the tears when he left the little pup on the floor upon seeing Faye recoupled? Or when Faye went to retrieve it.
Likewise, Faye actually grovelling, making coffees and clearing away breakfast plates, to show him how sorry she was.
Relationship low
I’m sure everyone will expect me to put that argument here but I think it was such a cruel and deliberate ploy by the Love Island producers to create drama, when Faye was clearly already struggling mentally with what had happened, I'm not prepared to use it here. I’m still very angry at Love Island for this cheap shot.
Moving on.
So, the low has to be how two people who so obviously cared for each other made such a mess of the Casa Amore situation. Perhaps Teddy could have abstained from games like Jake did, perhaps Faye could have waited to talk to Teddy before jumping into bed with another man. I'm just glad the whole situation is behind us... I mean them, now.
Will they last on the outside?
Yes. Nothing more to say, these guys are tight.
Chloe Burrows and Toby Amolaran
Without doubt the funniest couple on the show, they never fail to entertain and despite Toby Amolaran behaving like a child in a sweet shop for a large portion of his time in the villa, him and Chlow Burrows do seem like a pretty good match.
Relationship low
Toby dumping Chloe for Abi Rawlings. While most people were unsurprised when he split with Kaz Kamwi as they just weren't "vibing", it was a hell of a bombshell when he did the same thing to Chloe. Not cool Toby, really not cool.
Relationship high
It’s the silliness we just can’t get enough of with these two and when they are messing around they are at their truest and best. While I generally find discussions about the bedroom action rather cringy, when Toby gives his “match report” or Chole talks “NVQs” it’s just hilarious.
Will they last on the outside?
I think this relationship does have some staying power and will last for a while yet, but they are still very young, and I can’t help thinking after all the madness dies down, they will eventually go their separate ways.
Millie Court and Liam Reardon
It’s reverse Gavin and Stacy but in real life and their conversations are no less funny. Mille Court and Liam Reardon certainly hit a rocky patch after Casa Amore but they have built back stronger and seem more and more in love every day. I will hugely miss their deep conversations though, like when Millie asked Liam if he believed in dragons because he is Welsh and Liam naming Millie's mum as her sibling, believing "sibling" meant "close family".
Relationship low
When Liam had his head turned by Lillie Haynes in Casa Amore. I think we were all heartbroken for poor Millie as that one played out.
Relationship high
When Millie got most of the boys hearts racing with her lap dancing and Liam looked like he would burst with pride that she was his girl!
Will they last on the outside?
Yes, yes, yes! These two were meant for one other. And as Gavin and Stacy proved, the distance between Essex and Wales is not so far when you are really, really in love.
Kaz Kamwi and Tyler Cruickshank
This is not a relationship that sets my heart on fire if I’m completely honest. Tyler Cruickshank is unreasonably self-centred and Kaz Kamwi will put up with anything he throws at her while advising all the other girls to consider ditching their men if they commit the slightest of misdemeanours.
Relationship low
When Tyler told Kaz and Clarisse Juliette he needed time to choose which one of them he liked the best because it was a very tough decision. REALLY?!!! I just wanted both girls to tell him to stick it.
Relationship high
Tyler did eventually make and effort when last week he asked Kaz to go "exclusive" using the tried and tested Love Actually method.
Will they last on the outside?
It’s a hard no from me on this one. If Tyler can so easily dismiss their relationship, like he did in Casa Amore, and then so cruelly keep her waiting while he made up his mind, I just don’t think those feelings run deep.
Mary Bedford and Aaron Simpson
There's just something about Mary. She is gorgeous plus she has all the banter and I feel you could go for a pint with and have a really good time. Aaron isn’t quite as much of a character but Mary is “obsessed” with him so I wish them all the best!
Relationship low
The Little Mermaid lap dance outfit – I mean, why? Just why? Whichever member of the Love Island team did this to her obviously has a sadistic streak. Poor Mary.
Relationship high
The sweet treats brunch laid on by Aaron was really, well... sweet. And that raising the hat signal was the sign of a truly smooth operator.
Will they last on the outside?
I don’t have a firm reason why I think this, it’s just a gut feeling that they won’t be together for very long once they’ve left the villa.
Priya Gopaldas and Brett Staniland
I know they are very new to the show and maybe if they had more time I would warm to the pair but Priya Gopaldas and Brett Staniland are just not my cup of tea. While Priya is beautiful she is largely uneventful (except revealing she has dreams about Boris Johnson’s hair apparently) and I just don’t see her attraction to Brett at all – is it just me not seeing what a hunk he is?
Relationship low
The lap dance. I had difficulty watching these two, the cringe-factor was so high.
Relationship high
Their first date, when they were both bowled over by how similar they were - medical students? Tick! Perfect date, going for a run... wait, what? Okay, whatever floats your boat, you do you. Tick!
Will they last on the outside?
Well they have a lot in common and they seem to be really into each other so they stand a chance. It’s very early days for these two though and I’ve not seen enough of them to commit to a firm answer.
