A LARGE pothole on Hammet Street in Taunton is going to be repaired for the second time by Somerset County Council next month.

Hammet Street, located between the Church of St Mary Magdalene and the town centre, will be closed temporary while the pothole is fixed.

In June, a letter written to the Somerset County Gazette described the previous repair of the pothole as "bodged" and said it "is already sinking again".

The pothole has now been fenced off and the council says it will be repaired next month.

Somerset County Gazette:

A spokesperson for Somerset County Council said: "We’re grateful for the enquiry regarding Hammet Street – our team are already scheduled to carry out work on this defect next month.

"Due to the location this will require a temporary road closure, more details will be released soon.

"We encourage the public to report any road defects to us when they spot them – this can be done easily and quickly at www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/report-a-problem-on-the-road/."

Hammet Street is named after Sir Benjamin Hammet, whose 1788 Improvement Act for Taunton allowed the street to be built to improve carriage access to the church.

Two Fore Street houses were demolished to make way for the street, which now contains four listed buildings.
