Who decides school terms and holidays?
The local education authority sets the holiday dates for the schools under its control.
If your child attends an academy or private school, dates may differ as they can set their own dates but largely match those of the other schools in the area.
The other dates which may differ from school to school are the five days used for staff development, commonly referred to as inset days, when schools are closed to pupils.
This is due to schools being permitted to schedule these days to suit them.
Below are the school term and holiday dates set by Somerset County Council.
