ALL train services have been suspended on Network Rail's western route, which runs between Penzance and London Paddington.

Services are likely to remain suspended or disrupted for the rest of the day, and this will likely affect services tomorrow.

Mike Gallop, Network Rail western route and strategic operations director, said: "The decision we’ve taken to suspend all train services across the western route is one that has not been taken lightly, however the safety of our passengers and colleagues is paramount.

"The message to passengers is clear – please do not attempt to travel by train today.

"Our brave frontline teams are working tirelessly responding to the many instances of fallen trees and debris on track, so we are in a position to reopen the railway as quickly and safely as possible.

"I would like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding while we respond to this unprecedented weather, and we look forward to getting people moving again very soon."

Network Rails' statement came after Great Western Railway (GWR) posted a short video on Twitter at around 1:30pm to announce the temporary suspension of their services.

In the video, Dan Panes of GWR said: "Unfortunately, over the last hour or so, we've seen a number of reports across the network of fallen trees and other debris on the track.

"As a result, we've taken the decision to temporarily suspend services until Network Rail can inspect those sites and make sure it is safe for us to continue running trains.

"As a result, we've upgraded our advice from 'Only travelling if absolutely necessary' to 'Not travelling at all'.

"We're hoping that will change throughout the course of the day, but please keep checking for updates."

GWR has relaxed ticket restrictions, meaning people with tickets for today can use them at the weekend or on Monday.

Around 15 minutes later, South Western Railway (SWR) announced the suspension its services until at least 6pm due to 30 trees blocking "key routes' in its network.

In a joint statement with Network Rail, SWR said: "Gusts of more than 90mph wind have caused multiple incidents across the SWR network today, with 30 fallen trees already blocking key routes.

"As a result, SWR services have been suspended until at least 6pm and we strongly urge customers not to travel at this time.

"We are working hard to restore services, but ask customers to make alternative travel plans if they can.

"Customers should regularly check the ‘Plan my journey’ page on SWR’s website, which will be updated with the latest information every hour.

"We would like to apologise to our customers for the impact this will have on their journeys, but – as always – our primary concern is the safety and welfare of customers and colleagues out on the network."
