A MOTORIST has admitted speeding on the M5 between Wellington and Taunton - but he denies he was going as fast as the police claim.
John Henry David Gage, 51, of Bruford Drive, Cheddon Fitzpaine, pleaded guilty at Taunton Magistrates' Court to the offence between Junctions 26 and 25 on June 4 last year.
Police say Gage, who is a former Taunton Deane Borough Council member, was clocked at 110mph, but Gage told magistrates he was doing "no more than 95mph".
The case was adjourned to March 15.
A TAUNTON man who failed to reveal who was driving his car when suspected of committing a motoring offence has been banned from driving.
George-Florin Elisei, 35, of Redlake Drive, was handed six penalty points, which took him over the totting up limit and saw him disqualified for six months.
He was also fined £250 with a £34 victim surcharge and £85 costs for the offence relating to an incident on October 12 2020.
A LORRY driver has avoided a ban despite admitting driving without insurance.
The offence in Lympsham on March 10 this year earned Alexandru Madalin Gatitu, 30, of Jarvis Lane, East Brent, six penalty points on his licence.
But although it took him over the totting up limit for a disqualification, the magistrates did not ban him as it would have seen him lose his job.
He was fined £600 and ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
MINEHEAD man Anthony Michael Weaver has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding twice in the same month.
Weaver, 48, of Abbots Way, admitted doing 76mph on a 60mph stretch of the A303 dual carriageway near Wincanton on February 5 this year.
He was handed a £250 fine and received three penalty points on his licence.
He was given a further three points for driving at over 60mph in a van in Devon 20 days later, taking him over the totting up limit for a ban.
He was ordered to pay a £250 fine with a £50 victim surcharge and £85 costs for the second offence.
