WORKERS were on site to assess the damages suffered by a historic church in Wells when Storm Eunice hit Somerset last month.
A steeplejack visited St Thomas’s Church ahead of its restoration after its spire was brought down by the strong gales caused by the storm on Friday, February 18.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Bath and Wells said: “They’ve had a steeplejack on site who has fixed a ladder from the bottom of the spire to the top.
“They have now capped off the spire with a wooden waterproof top, which means the rain can’t get in. A couple of finials that were knocked as the spire fell have been checked.
“It has also been checked to make sure there are no loose bricks.
The church, which was built in mid-1800, is “open again for services” but “the grounds around the spire are still cordoned off,” the spokesperson also said.
