RESIDENTS gathered in Taunton town centre this morning (March 5) to hold a vigil in support of Ukraine and all those affected by the conflict.
The vigil took place outside Market House and started at 11am and raised £386 for humanitarian relief through The British Red Cross.
People held Ukrainian flags and banners with the writings, Stop the War, Stay Strong, Ukraine, No to War, and We stand with Ukraine.
Organiser Cllr Martin Peters said: “It is great that the people of Taunton are expressing their solidarity with Ukraine.
"The vigil also raised £386 pounds for humanitarian relief through The British Red Cross.”
The event was one of many initiatives that took place in the area this week.
In the last few days, several groups of residents and charities collected first aid items to help Ukrainian refugees.
Compass Wellbeing teamed with a group of Taunton residents to collect and send items needed at the Polish-Ukrainian border.
Several schools also collected donations, while other people decided to travel to the border themselves to deliver what was needed.
A candle-lit vigil was held in Bridgwater while an 11-year-old from the town translated his letters to reach children in Ukraine.
People can also donate essential supplies to Help for Ukraine Taunton.
These are being received by Compass Wellbeing from 9pm to 5pm at Belvedere Trading Estate.
