A BRIDGWATER cancer patient features on a Mother’s Day card sold nationwide in Tesco to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Julie Rose's story and photograph appear on the card, which aims to support people affected by the disease, while raising funds.
It has been designed by UK Greetings and is on sale as part of Tesco's ongoing support of Race for Life.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds annually.
Mum-of-three Julie, 49, received her cancer diagnosis during a family holiday in Cyprus in 2020.
Weeks earlier Julie, a freelance photographer had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
She said: “After being told I had cancer, I didn’t think it would be anything too much to worry about.
“It was explained I had a rare type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid cancer.
"I broke down at the shock of the news and fired a million questions at the doctor, but I was told I was OK to go on holiday.”
Julie added: “When I had a call whilst on holiday to say the cancer had spread, you can imagine I spent the rest of the week trying to digest this awful news.
"I was told any sudden movement could snap my spine.
"I put on a brave face for the rest of the holiday for the sake of my children.”
Back home, Julie went to hospital the next day, had the MRI and then surgery to remove the tumour the next day.
After three weeks, she had a thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection.
“Supporting Race for Life is a positive way for me to play my part and make a difference to the lives of people with cancer,” added Julie.
Julie is currently on a clinical trial and has been told her tumours have shrunk significantly.
Oonagh Turnbull, Tesco's head of charity campaigns, said: “We hope these cards will inspire others facing cancer and the money they raise will make a difference to so many lives."
Alison Birkett Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Somerset, said: “We're incredibly grateful to Julie and Tesco for their support.
“By purchasing one of the Mother’s Day cards, people can make a difference in the fight against cancer."
The £1 Mother’s Day cards are on sale in Tesco stores and at tesco.com until Sunday, March 27.
