A PROPERTY boasting almost 800 years of history is on the market - for more than £1million.
The Old Deanery, a Grade I listed building in a prominent position on The Cathedral Green, Wells, overlooking Wells Cathedral, has been brought to the market for sale by Savills.
The property was originally the primary residence for the Dean of the Cathedral between 1230 and 1958 before becoming the diocesan offices and an administration centre for the Diocese of Bath and Wells.
The property extends to circa 18,000 sq ft over three floors and across four wings that form a square, known as the North, South, East and West Ranges.
The Court is an additional 14th century building that once stood alone but now forms part of the main house to the east, while to the north is another building, dating back to the Victorian era, known as The Education Wing.
There is also an original stable block, converted to offices.
The Old Deanery is architecturally significant, with a considerable number of rare and remarkable historic features inside and out, including parapet gargoyles, beautiful stained glass windows, grand Tudor fireplaces and Jacobean wall paneling, which together document its unique heritage.
The property was used by the Diocese of Bath and Wells as offices for more than six decades until 2020, by which point it was no longer serving its needs effectively.
The organisation has since relocated to a modern, purpose-built office building.
The property was initially marketed for sale in 2020 and despite interest from a number of prospective buyers, did not generate a proceedable offer.
Commenting on its sale, James Millard, Head of Property and Glebe for the Diocese of Bath and Wells, said: ‘While The Old Deanery has always been a private property, it is a much-loved part of the local community, as well as an important piece of the city’s architectural history.
"Securing its future is of great importance to us and we will be working closely with Savills to ensure that any offers we receive are considered and progressed with utmost care."
David Wild, a director for Savills, specialising in the sale of property across Bristol and Somerset, said: "The Old Deanery is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and historic properties in Wells, situated in one of the most impressive locations, and, as such, its sale is of great significance.
‘It is a complex building, having been expanded and remodeled many times over its eight century history, for different uses.
"While it is being sold in its current guise as an office building, there is potential for a myriad of uses, subject to planning consent, and I am delighted to work with the diocese to identify a buyer that will honour and preserve its legacy, while providing it with a positive future."
The Old Deanery is being marketed by Savills for offers in excess of £1,100,000.
