A COUNCILLOR is campaigning to update a roundabout where he claims there have been numerous near misses.

Cllr Giuseppe Fraschini says he has lots of support for his proposals to update the roundabout on Eastwick Road at its junction with Selworthy Road.

He took up the case after being contacted by a number of people concerned about the safety of the road layout.

"I took an officer from County Hall down there 18 months ago and he said that today it wouldn't be put in like that as it doesn't conform to modern standards," said Cllr Fraschini, who represents Taunton North on Somerset County Council.

"Lots of residents had contacted me about the safety of that roundabout saying they're nearly been hit by vehicles coming the other way.

"I've had a near miss there myself.

"When you meet a lorry or larger vehicle or a normal car when the driver isn't paying attention and goes over the middle of the roundabout, it gets very tight."

"It just needs to be made safer."

Cllr Fraschini, if he is elected to the new Somerset Council in May's poll, says he would submit a proposal to the authority's small improvements scheme for changes to the layout.

That application would then go before a panel, who would come up with various options if they felt the initiative should go ahead.

"The feedback to what I'm planning to do has been very positive," said Cllr Fraschini.
