GOLD in all its guises proved an irresistible temptation at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s March antiques sale.

But it was a beautiful seascape that took top spot at The Octagon Salerooms, in East Reach, Taunton.

'The Incoming Tide St Ives Bay', an oil on canvas, signed and dated by the artist David James (1854-1904) sparked a good deal of pre-sale interest.

On the day a keen, local, private collector emerged victorious to clinch the painting for just shy of £9,000.

Elsewhere in the sale it was gold that captivated, much exceeding estimates and the current gold price.

A number of examples of modern chain link jewellery attracted interest.

An 18ct gold curb link bracelet sold for £1,600, while a 1970s 9ct gold fancy link long chain went for £1,340, and an attractive gold mesh bracelet made £1,350.

A 9ct gold half-pocket watch by J.W. Benson surpassed its pre-sale estimate with the hammer coming down at £1,000.

A monogrammed and hallmarked 9ct gold cigarette case from the 1920s sold for £1,200.

The winning combination of gold and the allure of the heavyweight name of Rolex proved another winning combination in the saleroom. An example from the early 1970s sold for £2,000.

The next sale takes place on Thursday, April 7. To consign items or for more information please call the saleroom on 01823 332525.
