SOMERSET County Council have set up a web page so that residents can receive help when sponsoring a Ukrainian refugee.

Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset District are just some of the councils working together to provide this support.

The assistance for sponsors is also being backed by Avon and Somerset Police, Somerset NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, as well as help from organised community groups, and charities.

The web page outlines that: “The initial priority is to identify local sponsors, carry out checks, and help Ukrainian people settle safely in Somerset.”

Some of the services being offered by the support scheme include placement in schools and nurseries for refugees, as well as the transport to these places.

Somerset residents can register their interest to become a sponsor by following a link to a digital form on the website.

Also included is a digital form to fill out once matched with a refugee, which allows local services to carry out all the necessary checks before the process is completed.

For those not in a position to sponsor, the web page offers other ways Somerset residents can support refugees, with links to charities and helplines to aid the cause.
