Taunton Town 3-2 Weston-super-Mare
AFTER 37 league games, Taunton Town have, for the the first time this season, reached top spot of the Pitching In Southern League.
Ben Adelsbury's 89th minute free kick sailing into the top corner of the net was the moment that sealed the win against Weston-super-Mare and perhaps is the best moment of the season. So far.
After the match, manager Rob Dray agreed to that sentiment.
"We have had some amazing moments at this football club in the last six years, but that goal from Ben today may just be up there with the best.
"Hopefully there will be more moments like it yet to come this season.
"Weston were good today, I have to admit, but we found a way and we will enjoy that win."
In the early exchanges of the match Taunton were on top and they broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Gethyn Hill headed home an Adelsbury cross.
The Peacocks kept the pressure on and doubled their lead in the 28th minute through a well hit volley from Joe Budd; he found the back of the net after Hill picked him out with a pinpoint cross.
It looked set to go to the break with Taunton in front by two however after Town failed to clear their lines, Jordan Bastin hit home the rebound to make it 2-1.
In the second period Weston came out firing; Scott Laird and McCootie both had chances to score early in the second half.
In the 50th minute the scores were level when right back Kieran Thomas unleashed a thunderbolt from very long range that sailed into the top corner.
For the next half an hour it was a tense battle with neither side really creating a clear cut opportunity despite the 1241 strong crowd making some incredible noise.
And the Taunton fans among the crowd had reason to cheer when Ben Adelsbury stepped up and perfectly placed his free kick effort from 25-yards-out into the top corner.
Absolute scenes. 'We are top of the league, say we are top of the league' the crowd sang.
Truly a special moment for Taunton fans.
