ANTIQUES come in all shapes and sizes and the comprehensive range on offer at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s April sale catered for all tastes.
Chinese items have been strong sellers in the antiques world for some years.
The market has been driven by Oriental buyers keen to reclaim these treasures and return them to their homeland.
A large pair of Chinese bottle vases proved trade in this market continues apace.
Bidding began briskly for these attractive vases, both in good condition and decorated with bands of trailing peonies, bearing six character Kangxi mark within double circle to base.
The vases were bought for £4,300 – the top lot of the day.
However it isn’t only the beautiful that can prove successful in the saleroom.
A rather, tatty button upholstered leather Chesterfield sofa drew a good deal of pre-sale attention.
Guided at £400-£600 this unremarkable piece - ideally suited for re-upholstery - exceeded expectations as bidders vied to take it home. It was eventually bought for £1,500.
A large pair of late Victorian/early 20th Century terracotta urns also caused a stir and were bought for £1,050.
